PYREX

Pyrex® is a borosilicate glass that differs from other types of glass by its particularly high resistance to chemical exposure, thermal expansion, and thermal shock. Pyrex® can resist attack from acids, saline solutions, halogens, and organic solvents. Only hydrofluoric acid, hot concentrated phosphoric acid and strong alkaline solutions can corrode it. These characteristics are very useful for laboratory glassware that needs to be heated directly, such as beakers, test tubes or flasks, or that is used to perform chemical reactions. Borosilicate glass was first manufactured by the German glass chemist and technologist Otto Schott, founder of Schott AG in 1893. Today, Corning is the company that produces laboratory glassware under the Pyrex brand. Schott AG sells the product under the name "Duran".
